The community is politically active, championing causes from LGBTQ+ rights to climate change action. H4S is a City & County funded Rapid Re-Housing program composed of various organizations that provide housing navigation, subsidized housing, and case management to unaccompanied youth and homeless young adults ages (16-24). Since 1910, TCH’s mission to advance inclusion, self-sufficiency, and advocacy has supported the growth and unity of our community.
Immigration Intake
By learning the language in a supportive, welcoming environment, students gain the confidence to use English in everyday situations. That might be answering the phone, filling out forms at the doctor’s office, or helping a child with homework! People who speak English also have a much easier time finding jobs and enrolling in school/training programs.
Mission
Fostering a space where young people come together to support, inspire, and uplift one another. Together we are fighting for resources, equity, participation, diversity, and human rights. Adults who are interested in preparing for the GED® tests or improving their basic skills can do so by enrolling in Tacoma Community House’s Adult Basic Education (ABE) Classes. We are here to help students increase their skills in reading, writing, math, and computer usage. A foreign citizen seeking to live permanently in the United States requires an immigrant visa (IV). To be eligible to apply for an IV, a foreign citizen must be sponsored by an immediate relative who is at least 21 years of age and is either a U.S. citizen or U.S.

"We have incredible staff members who serve the community with so much love and care and I want to make sure we hold them up. Opening its doors in 1910, for 113 years Tacoma Community House has been a haven and source of support for immigrants of all backgrounds, and over the years evolved to embrace homeless youth as well. Now in a new chapter in its storied history, TCH has welcomed a new executive director following the departure of Lauren Walker Lee in 2021 after her three years of excellent leadership. For some, earning their GED® is a goal, while others want to increase their skills before entering a local community college. Many students who enroll in the program often go on to further their education or improve their employment standing.

A special Ukrainian Relief Fund was established in December last year and, thanks to generous community members, TCH’s year-end campaign for this fund exceeded the $100,000 goal by an additional $30,000. Khuu started volunteering with migrant farm working communities more than 25 years ago, and she said this work catalyzed a passion within her for social justice and a learning journey to better understanding her role as a global citizen. Over one million immigrants arrive in the United States each year, and many need assistance navigating the naturalization process. Our team of Department of Justice (D.O.J.) Accredited Immigration Specialists and trained instructors have partnered with the Pierce County Library System to host Citizenship Classes to prepare you for your citizenship interview and civics exam. The organization changed its name to Tacoma Community House in 1922 and continued to develop new services as community needs shifted. Living in Seattle offers a lifestyle filled with outdoor and cultural activities. Residents enjoy hiking, skiing, and boating thanks to the nearby mountains and waterways.
Youth can submit requests for housing or homelessness services through The REACH website. The Open Space empowers youth and young adults aged to freely choose how they spend their time, whether it’s to relax, play, learn, or connect. This event will feature engaging speakers, heartfelt stories, and opportunities to connect with fellow attendees.
The city boasts a lively arts scene, with numerous theaters, museums, and music venues. Khuu comes to TCH from Providence Home and Community Care where she was chief of health equity. She earned a master’s degree from the University of Washington in Public Administration with a focus on nonprofit management and has 15 years of national and international non-profit leadership experience. Khuu served as an English Language Acquisition (ELA) teacher in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and is fluent in Spanish, having studied, worked and volunteered in Mexico, Guatemala, and Argentina.

Due to the overwhelming demand for immigration services, we are not currently accepting any new cases. We will continue to prioritize applications for green card holders to become US citizens and renewals for current DACA recipients.
